Making the Best Choice on a New Receiver
A stereo receiver today is not simply something you use to push sound out of a CD player or TV. Today a home stereo is more a system that is able to control all of your components and give you a true theater experience with top of the line technological advancements. Some of these receivers can get pretty pricey and you may not necessarily need to spend so much.
The problem becomes finding a receiver that does what you need it to do without spending an arm and a leg in the process. Consider the current equipment that you have and if it is even going to be compatible with a high end receiver. If you have an older TV without HD and a normal DVD player, you won’t need to spend that much money on one that has all of those hook ups.
Know first what you are going to use the receiver for. This will be an important consideration when you finally go to the store to shop. Each receiver is setup for a specific purpose. Some are for movies while some are for music, and others will do both. Although it is fun to see all of the different options (and may be wise) it will save you plenty of time knowing exactly what you want first.
When making a decision as to which stereo system you want, you should always hear what it sounds like first. Most stores have a demonstration room with their entire receiver models hooked up. This way you will know what to expect from the product you buy. When testing it, ask them to turn it up to the distortion point. If it sounds like it gets distorted when it’s not very loud, you may want to consider another brand.
Consider your speakers as well. Let the person know what type of speakers you have to see what receiver will compliment them the best. Ask them their honest opinion rather than just the most expensive brand. Usually they will be upfront and honest with you if you just ask. Or just browse the internet to see what kind of consumer reviews it is getting.
Last but not least, how easy is it to set up and use? You shouldn’t have to read a thousand page manual or take a course on receivers to be able to run and operate it. This goes for the remote too. Make sure the buttons are all labeled properly and that you can control your other components through it or vice versa.
